Under new director, LH band performs like a ‘well-oiled machine’

The high school’s marching band is off to a quick start under new Director of Bands Jon Shultz in the first year after Monty Hill, the former director, resigned to become director of marching bands at New Mexico State University. And Shultz said that the band’s success – winning its first two competitions – shows that the program’s nearly 500 members have the skill to excel in almost any situation. "It just makes me really proud of our kids, because it shows that they got behind the band directors," Shultz said. Technically, the students were always behind Shultz, which made him the position’s prime candidate this summer, Superintendent Steve Anderson said. Shultz was an assistant director under Hill for seven years before taking over the top spot, and Anderson said winning in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday and Poteau, Okla., on Sept. 29 shows that Shultz knows how to keep the program running like a welloiled machine. "It goes to show the band program is on solid footing," Anderson said. "Hill left the band (program) with a solid foundation, and (these wins) shows that we made the right decision to hire Shultz." The band’s ability to perform like a well-oiled machine is what earned it eight out of 10 possible awards at the Renegade Review in Tulsa. The 114-member marching band performed a seven-minute-long routine titled "Mechanism," during which the band members imitate the gears and cogs of a machine. Drum Majors Savannah Kelley, Kristyna Gleghorn and Michael Kornegay summed up the early season success with one word: "awesome." The drum majors had nothing but positive things to say about the "Mechanism" routine, which Shultz put together this summer. The drum majors are especially fond of the routine’s ending, during which the musicians imitate robots powering down. Kornegay, a senior, said most of the band’s members thought that the group would place in the top five but did not expect to bring home eight out of 10 possible first place trophies. The band won best overall, best in their size classification and almost every award for individual sections. Kelley, a junior, said knowing the new director made it easy. "Mr. Shultz was there with the old director (Hill), so he knew how things went," she said.
